Making one million members feel like a community.

Overview

Outlier is Scale AI's platform for the contributors who train AI models, about a million people worldwide. When I joined Scale, the relationship between the company and the contributors was in poor shape. People often expressed that they felt they only heard from Outlier after decisions had been made, and the subreddit where contributors shared their experiences anonymously and openly was full of frustration.

Outlier is a workforce community. People rely on the income, and that raises the standard for how a company communicates. Contributors felt they had no consistent source of information, no reliable route for raising problems, and no evidence anyone was listening. None of this was isolated. It was happening across multiple surfaces, and because contributors had built their own public space to talk to each other, all of it was visible.
I owned three areas: Reddit community management, contributor experience research and advocacy, and internal community strategy.
Trust-building: I posted under my own name, said what I actually thought, and did what I said I would do until that stopped being surprising.
Individual advocacy: Account deactivation reversals, review inconsistencies, pay issues, false flags from automated screenings, one at a time, until I could see the patterns underneath them.
A route for member concerns: The first systematic path from the community to the teams who could resolve things, so an issue could be raised, tracked, and found again.
The Oracle Community program: Rebuilt the Oracle member experience across roughly 7,000 experienced contributors, pairing dedicated community managers with them directly.
Building Outlier Community 2.0: A full redesign run in collaboration with our platform vendor, design and brand teams, and the community managers reporting to me, shipped in a couple of months. The point wasn't a better-looking platform, but giving contributors somewhere to find each other, moving feedback somewhere the company could act on it, and making Outlier Community a place people actually wanted to spend their time.
Hundreds of contributor accounts restored, for people who had been deactivated by mistake and had no way to get an answer until escalations from the community started reaching the teams who could reverse them.
Problems made visible and trackable, with case studies circulated and issues categorized instead of surfacing one complaint at a time, so internal teams knew which failures were real, how large they were, and where to fix them at the source.
A more contributor-focused experience, with a handbook, a code of conduct, and plain guidance on when to contact support versus a project team, so the platform stopped depending on people guessing.
Trust rebuilt where it had broken, in public, with positive posts nearly tripling in four months and sentiment improving more than fourfold after the redesign, because contributors were hearing from a person who came back with what she'd promised.
The most experienced contributors retained, through a program that more than doubled their engagement with community managers and was continuing to expand into micro-communities and cohort experiments before I left.
Underneath all of it, this was a group of people who depended on an organization and had no reliable way to be heard. That isn't unique to AI, or to contracting work, or to companies this size. I was one person, and I started by putting band-aids on individual cases. Those things mattered enormously to the people they happened to, but no amount of individual advocacy changes a system on its own. I'm proud of what we built, and I reached the limit of what I could do from where I sat. Systems like this don't get built with community in mind, but I also worked alongside brilliant, kind people who did everything they could within the constraints they were operating in.
